Spray Tanning & Airbrush Tanning by Lori Crane The Spa at Fig Garden VillageThe spray tanning & airbrush tanning technique is a quick and easy way to achieve a beautiful, even tan without exposing the skin to harmful ultraviolet rays. A solution of Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, is added to a sugar-based solution, which reacts with the amino acids in the skin, causing the outer skin layer to turn a desirable shade of brown. The procedure is done by simply applying the tanning solution onto the client’s skin with a fine-mist spray gun. The solution sets for five to eight hours before it is washed off. After the solution is washed off, the DHA remains and allows the color to come to the skin’s surface, creating a spectacular tan.
One of the many reasons for spray tanning or airbrush tanning’s popularity is that unlike bed tanning, it does not damage the skin. Fair complected people whose skin cannot tolerate the intensity of the tanning bed, can achieve a safe, beautiful tan from airbrushing. In fact, all complexions from fair-skin to olive tones will look beautiful with an airbrush tan. Individuals with skin conditions such as rosacea and vitiligo also benefit from spray tanning and airbrush tanning.
Spray tanning or airbrush tanning will last approximately seven days or longer. Tan fading rate is influenced by the skin’s natural exfoliation rate, the pre-tan preparation, post-tan care, general skin heath, and the client’s lifestyle. A sunless tan will fade a little every day, just like a UV-based tan.
